Description

Ajrakh Printed Linen Cotton Saree Using Natural Dyes

Ajrakh literally means “Aaj ke din rakh” i.e keep it for today, because that is what the process is. At every stage of the tedious dyeing process, the fabric is kept for drying for three to four days. Nature plays an important role making of Ajrakh. It is a dyeing process which uses molasses, alum, wheat flour, fennel, gum arabic, lime, millet flour, tamarind seeds, rot iron turmeric and pomegranate skins etc. Ajrakh designs are traditionally devoid of animal figures and represnt local botany, ceremonious fruits and interpretations of the night sky.

Evidences of Ajrakh printing could be found in excavations of Indus Valley Civilization as well as draped around mummies in Egypt.
